| While tattoos were once considered permanent, it is now possible to remove them with treatments. Laser treatments gradually fade the tattoo by breaking and dispersing the pigment that is fixed within the layer of your skin, so that your body is able to eliminate it as waste via your circulatory and lymphatic system.
Remember, this is a gradual process and happens over time. A local or topical anaesthetic may be used prior to treatment.
At the time of treatment you can expect some redness and swelling that will subside over 24 – 48 hours, you will be asked to apply Bepanthan cream, an antiseptic cream that ensures the integrity of the skin.
Your consultant will work within the set parameters in strength of laser and will be guided by your feedback at each session. If you do experience crusting following treatment, keep tattoo clean and apply Bepanthan 4 times a day, do not pick or scratch at site and let skin heal spontaneously. You are required to wait 4 – 6 weeks between treatments.
The cost for each session is based on the size of the area treated.
The reason there can be no definite time frame given to eliminate your tattoo is because of the number of variables outlined relating to each individuals tattoo.
Variables include:
- Colour of tattoo.
- Length of time you have had the tattoo.
- Type of dye impregnated in the skin.
- How will your body eliminate waste products.
- Depth of tattoo within the skin.
- Colour of tattoo:- Darker colours will fade quickly while green, yellow and red are more difficult to fade.
Time:- How long you have had your tattoo.
- Dye:- Type/colour of ink used in your tattoo.
Elimination:- How your body eliminates waste products.
Depth:- Of tattoo in your individual skin.
- Complexion:- Dark complexions must be treated carefully as the laser reacts to dark pigment within the skin.
Scarring is possible as a result of unpredictable individual reactions in the skin. If the skin blisters or crusts this may also cause a degree of scarring, however, with the correct aftercare this is minimised.
